ORIGINAL SPIRITS: THE WALKING DEAD Tuesday, August 07, 2012
We eat and drink to replenish our bodies with life’s necessary ingredients, but the reason we eat and drink together is to dream up ways to answer the unanswerable. Like, say, if the impending Zombie Apocalypse transpired, right now, who would fare better: zombies, or that equally undead constituency made up of vampires?
Zombies are many and spread like viruses, but are they fast enough, let along smart enough, to outfox, catch up to and feed on those speedier, craftier and far more sophisticated vampires? Can vampires feed on zombies to stay alive? What if those zombies had just fed on us? Would that make any difference?
Curious? Of course you are. So as a tribute to zombies, vamps and your unslaked thirst for chewing over life’s most enigmatic questions, we invite you to join us on Wednesdays and ask your bartender, Jessica, to resurrect her Walking Dead, a recent favorite in our roster of Homegrown Wednesdays cocktails.
Comprised of two Portland spirits (New Deal No. 3 Gin and House Spirits’ Aquavit), lemon juice and a few aromatic dashes of Seattle’s Scrappy’s Lavender Bitters, this local take on the not-so-classic-and-somewhat-rare Corpse Survivor cocktail, is shook hard, twice-strained and served up over a blood-red, syrupy-sweet house-brandied cherry that will tempt you at the bottom of your glass.
Gauzy and cloudy, this irresistibly magical drink is, at once, bitter, sweet, floral and tart.
